Chaosnet Darknode

Run a Darknode for Chaosnet

Chaosnet is no longer live, RenVM is now on Mainnet.

Overview

Ren is built on top of a decentralized virtual machine known as RenVM. This virtual machine is replicated over thousands of machines that work together to power it, contributing their network bandwidth, their computational power, and their storage capacity. These machines are known as Darknodes.

Darknodes communicate with other Darknodes around the world to keep RenVM running. Without them, there is no virtual machine upon which Ren can exist. RenVM uses Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus algorithms and secure multiparty computations so that Darknodes can be operated by anyone without needing to trust them. This is what makes RenVM — and by extension Ren itself — decentralized, trustless, and private.

Why run a Darknode on Chaosnet?

Ren assumes that all Darknodes are rational and will not contribute resources to RenVM unless they are economically incentivised to do so. Users must pay fees whenever they use RenVM, whether this be moving tokens between blockchains or running trustless scripts in secret. These fees are paid out to Darknodes as a reward for contributing their resources to RenVM.

By running a Chaosnet Darknode specifically, you are inherently helping us test RenVM (Computer and VPS). One of the core purposes of Chaosnet is to test the real world incentives of RenVM. Running (and continuing to run) a Chaosnet Darknode says something about the incentives at play: they’re enough to get people running Darknodes. And this helps us! In fact, by not running a Chaosnet Darknode you’re also inherently helping us test. It’s telling us there’s something not quite right with the incentives.

Why the 10,000 REN Bond for Chaosnet?

The reason we chose to reduce the bond to 10,000 REN is simple; we want to make it easier for Darknodes to collude and lower the monetary risk for those who help us test in a pre-production environment. The 10,000 REN bond is only applicable to this stage and will not be considered for Mainnet.

You have a real chance of losing this 10K REN bond, Chaosnet is not for the faint hearted. Please proceed at your own risk.

Prerequisites

Anyone with 10,000 REN can participate, but with the understanding that this is an unaudited, pre-production version of RenVM.

  • Open and Permissionless: YES Anyone can participate, but with the understanding that this is an unaudited, pre-production version of RenVM.

  • Darknode Bond: 10,000 REN The reason we chose to reduce the Chaosnet bond to 10,000 REN is simple; we want to make it easier for Darknodes to collude and lower the monetary risk for those who help us test in a pre-production environment. The 10,000 REN bond is only applicable to this stage and will not be considered for Mainnet.

  • Manual Darknode Installation Required: YES Those that wish to support RenVM during Chaosnet will need to create and register a Chaosnet Darknode separately. Legacy Mainnet (Republic Protocol) has been sunset in favor of Chaosnet.

Darknode Rewards

The current reward structure for Darknodes is 10 BPS (0.1%) per transaction. Example: If there is a $100 swap from BTC to DAI, the Darknode network will earn .10 USD in BTC, which will be split evenly amongst all fully registered Darknodes. If there is a $200 swap from DAI to BTC, Darknode network will earn .20 USD in DAI, which will be split evenly amongst all fully registered Darknodes.
